Meal MilesMeal miles (or food miles) refer to the amount of distance traveled by food, from farm to table. This includes the packaging and distributions miles, as well as transporting the food home from the store.
All that travel takes time, which means your food isn't fresh. It has to be picked early in order to maintain and not spoil. Often, the produce is chemically processed in order to ripen at a controlled time.
What Can You Do?Be Aware. Challenge yourself to write down everything you eat through the day, and take note of where the products and ingredients come from. Calculate the meal miles. You will be astonished by the amount of traveling your food does.
Buy Local. Begin sourcing local goods and produce by joining a CSA or shopping at a farmers market. Information on these can be found here. |
